Kidney Cysts

Kidney cysts are fluid-filled sacs that develop in the kidneys. These cysts can be either simple or complex. Simple cysts are usually harmless and do not require treatment, while complex cysts may require further evaluation and management.

Simple kidney cysts are quite common and usually develop as a person ages. They are usually found incidentally during imaging studies for other medical conditions. Simple cysts do not usually cause any symptoms and do not require treatment unless they become large enough to cause discomfort or affect kidney function.

Complex kidney cysts may require further evaluation to determine their cause and whether they are cancerous or not. A complex cyst may have thick walls or internal septations, which are walls within the cyst that divide it into compartments. In some cases, a biopsy or surgical removal may be necessary to determine if the cyst is cancerous.

If you have been diagnosed with a kidney cyst, it is important to follow up with your healthcare provider to determine the best course of treatment based on the size and complexity of the cyst.
