A kidney infection, also known as pyelonephritis, is a type of urinary tract infection (UTI) that affects the kidneys. It occurs when bacteria from the bladder or urethra travel up to the kidneys and cause an infection.

Symptoms

Symptoms of a kidney infection include:

  • High fever
  • Chills and shaking
  • Flank pain or lower back pain
  • Nausea and vomiting
  • Painful urination
  • Cloudy or foul-smelling urine
  • Painful urination
  • Blood in the urine

If you suspect that you have a kidney infection, it is important to seek medical attention right away. A kidney infection can cause serious complications if left untreated, such as kidney damage or sepsis.

Treatment

Treatment for a kidney infection usually involves antibiotics to kill the bacteria causing the infection. In severe cases, hospitalization may be necessary for intravenous antibiotics and supportive care. Drinking plenty of fluids and taking pain relievers can also help manage symptoms.

Prevention

To prevent kidney infections, it is important to practice good hygiene, such as wiping front to back after using the bathroom, staying hydrated, and urinating frequently. If you are prone to UTIs, your healthcare provider may recommend additional measures to prevent infection, such as taking prophylactic antbiotics or using a urinary catheter.
